Lady Phyll (Phyllis Akua Opoku-Gyimah)
Phyll Opoku-Gyimah is co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of UK Black Pride, Europe’s largest celebration for LGBTQI+ people of African, Asian, Caribbean, Middle Eastern and Latin American descent, launched in 2005. She is widely known as Lady Phyll, reflecting her decision to reject an MBE in protest at Britain’s role in formulating anti-LGBTQI+ penal codes across its empire during the colonial era. She was previously executive director of Kaleidoscope Trust, an organisation working to uphold the human rights of LGBTQI+ people around the world. A dedicated community builder and public speaker on race, gender, sexuality and class, she has devoted over two decades to human rights advocacy.
