NOKI
Artist NOKI, also known as Dr NOKI, came to prominence in the mid-1990s as part of an underground community of creatives that emerged in Shoreditch, East London. He was the first manager of the ‘BriCkie’s’ pub. Known as the king of the ‘mash-up & mask’ style, NOKI created customised one-offs, splicing second-hand sportswear to create custom-built collage art with a conscious political intent. With logos flipped on their heads, his new look was hailed as marking an end to being ‘branded’, with a return to an authentic sustainable culture. His textile collages have been shown at the V&A, MoMA and MAK Vienna, and worn by many celebrities.
