Peter Nicholls & Catherine Chinatree
Peter Nicholls, who is of Indian Ocean Creole origins, is a historian, artist and musician based in Margate. His work explores the merging of transatlantic and Indian Ocean histories in the Seychelles islands, a heritage now experienced ‘beneath the surface’ in the Thames Estuary coastal environment. Drawing on marine archaeology, archival research, oral histories, music and diasporic imaginaries, Nicholls explores the possibilities of discovering and holding partially lost or erased histories through creative, reparative and community-centred approaches. Along with members of the Margate-based community organisation People Dem Collective, he is co-founder of the Thames Estuary Sunken Slave Ships Project.
Catherine Chinatree is a multidisciplinary artist based in Margate. She studied at Wimbledon College of Arts, graduating with an MA in Fine Art, and produces large-scale paintings, both indoors and outdoors. Her recent projects include a work commissioned for The World Reimagined project, now on permanent display at the World Museum in Liverpool, and a mural for Rise Up Residency in Margate, highlighting ocean conservation and biodiversity. She also produced a piece for the UK Covid Inquiry commemorative tapestry, exploring the experiences of care home residents and their relatives, and is currently co-creating a billboard artwork with Kent Refugee Action Network.
